My Journey Finding Comfort in the Uncomfortable
My journey sharing the Wim Hof Method started at Jean Jacques Machado's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy. Rickson Gracie was hosting a seminar and was talking about how he learned proper breathing and movement from Academia Orlando Cani, the founder of Bioginástica, and how it was the second most important thing he learned in his life after Jiu-Jitsu. He also talked about why he practiced cold immersion. The reason he gave was "to embrace death."
Fast forward a few weeks and one of the head instructors of Bioginástica, Marcelo Barros, came and lived with Eric Medina, Alejandro Perez, and myself at The Los Angeles Jiu Jitsu Club. He showed us proper breathing mechanics and some really cool movement techniques. During this time, we would all regularly jump into our cold pool to see how long we could last.
It wasn't long until we heard about "The Iceman" Wim Hof, who was doing the same thing and showing the scientific community the health and psychological benefits of doing the exact same exercises we were already doing.
I've always looked at my experience with the Wim Hof Method as an extension of my Jiu-Jitsu. I'm very excited for others to hear this conversation with these two amazing men. Let me know what comes up for you.
